You know what grinds my gears? People that ask too many favors. As many of you may know or have guessed, I work in the IT industry. I’m a technical serviceman. I do it all: Websites, networks, wireless, upgrades, downgrades, installations, troubleshooting. You give me a problem, chances are I can either a.) fix it or b.) fix it. I’m just that good.
So when people ask me to look at their home PC and find out why it’s running slow, I’m more than happy to oblige. I’ll usually do a couple things to speed it up. I’ll run through and polish the OS as much as I can without compromising their data. I’ll disinfect the machine from spyware, adware, malware. I upgrade the OS to the newest patches. I spend a decent amount of time on each system (usually an hour or two). I’m not one of those techies that looks through the pictures and movies on a computer. I don’t really care – I’ll only chastise people for not having antivirus, having the wrong antivirus, or having limewire installed.
But when these people become repeat customers, it starts to irk me a little bit. Why am I going out of my way to help you when you don’t heed my advice and you don’t give me anything in return? Most people barter with me – I’ll buy you lunch if you get this flash website to work on my system, or I’ll buy you lunch for a week if you install XP on my laptop. Other people barter but make me get my own treats – I’ll buy you pizza for lunch, but since I’m busy all the time YOU have to go pick it up. I’m lazy, so I don’t like driving to pick up something for me and you. In essence, I’m doing YOU a favor by picking up food for YOU at the same time I eat.
Money speaks volumes. Volumes and volumes. I like volumes of money. Unfortunately, not many people are willing to pay for my services. I’m not sure why people would rather plop down $40 on food for a week instead of paying me $40, but I think it has something to do with an “over time” vs “right now” thing. Or maybe they think I’m too sickly thin and need to eat? Who knows.
People that ask for favors without offering AND delivering in return are mooches. Mooches suck. And that’s what grinds my gears.
